    shifter rattle

i had the factory short shift put in by my local mecahnic (who i trust) last year...this winter, in the cold, there is a rattle between 3500 and 4000 rpm in 2nd 3rd and 4th gears...took it to the dealer who tightened "things" and said whoever installed it didn't attach a "spring"..i called my mechanic and he said there was no spring and i called the subaru dealer in tacoma where the shifter was shipped from and he said there is no "spring" either....anybody know if there is a tensioning spring on the factory short shifter? it is amazing that two authorized dealer would have opposite opinions about something which seems basic.... thanks, bluedream

There is no spring. I installed mine so I'm sure. This shifter buzzes sometimes. Especially with the Kartboy bushings. I find myself resting my hand on it to keep it quiet.

I notice it in the top of first when i grap the knob when running hard,
Funny my miata has the same thing but it is the knob itself in there.

interestingly, i unscrewed my sti titanium shift knob and let it hang loose in the boot and shifted just with the "arm" and the rattle went away...then i reattached the knob and the rattle stayed away until the next morning....i did this twice and the results were the same....weird....bluedream

mine buzzes but it's from my shift knob, not the SS kit.

the allen screws loosen up after a while.

this noise sounds like a baby rattle or a rattlesnake at certain rpms....it may be the sti shift knob although i don't know what is rattling in it...goes away if it is warm outside ie above freezing bluedream

    Mine makes noises too.

Mine starts making noticeable noises above 45mph even when windows are up.
I take them off when not using and bought rear-mounted rack (cost me total $400)

recommend not to buy roof racks.
