Which way does oil drain plug crush washer face?

I've re-used my crush washer a few times and it's finally developed a slow leak. I'll be replacing it upon my next oil change, but I'm unsure which way the washer should face when it's properly installed.

The crush washer has a flat side and a curved side. Should the flat side face inwards toward the pan, or should it go outwards toward the head of the drain bolt?

Does the orientation of the crush washer even matter?

I ended up with conflicting answers after a search.

The flat side rests against the drain plug not the pan.

Is there any logic behind this orientation of the crush washer (so that I'll be able to remember it next time I'm wedged under the car)?

    Drain plug - Flat
Hole in pan - Not flat
