RE: running out of gas - I'm thinking more and more it was a heat related fuel expansion issue - i.e. vapor lock. Now that I think about it - a while before it happened I smelled gas fumes. Thought I was just dreaming things but it must have been. I think the gas expanded and combined with 106 degree heat and everything else I think it was starting to boil and vapor lock. A fresh tank of gas / different type of gas may have made the difference for the rest of the day.

South Dakota was certainly hard on the car. I tested the oil before I left NY and am having it changed now. I will have it tested again to see a before / after - and will post the results. I am running Amsoil - have about 12 on the oil now (tested fine around 9k).

I think I'll keep her on the ground - but I have been wanting a truck again! The guy who I bought it from totally debadged the car too. So the back side is totally naked.

I've got to say I was very impressed at how well it towed. The trailer was easy - I passed an RV in Wyoming and hit 90 in 4th gear. I was most worried about the elevation in CO - and it was starting to dog in the later parts of Wyoming. But then all the sudden it came back to life (don't know if it recalibrated or what). I towed it up I70 in 4th gear between 65 and 70mph - no real issues (just kept it under 4000 RPMs with a bit of boost) - and then hit one of the mountain passes. I was expecting it to be a lot more work but it was a champ - pulled it right over 12000 ft without flinching and kept up with traffic the entire way.

The worst part was the headwind in South Dakota.

Ought to be fun this winter with some cold air and less weight in the car when we go riding!
