Engine Light Rich Bank 1 P0172

My 2002 WRX I've just bought has a check engine light on. It shows P0172 Running Rich Bank 1. No other faults indicated. I've replaced the O2 sensor, changed the spark plugs and replaced the gas cap lid and the light keeps coming on. The air filter looks dirty and it has a dirty APS Blow off valve, could either of these be causing my engine light? What should I check next? It has 78000 Miles and I've also just done an oil change....thanks for reading...

Pretty sure it would be the BOV.. Everything I read on this forum leans towards not having a BOV .. at least not at basic power levels.

Check your grounds, once I had a faulty ground that was throwing false CEL codes.

+1 the BOV is going to cause a rich condition by nature, i haven't heard of it causing a P0172 code but it's possible

My car also has a aftermarket cone filter which I've read may cause that code. I'm wondering if maybe a BOV that's way out of adjustment may cause an excessive rich condition. I've thought that the one on my car may have the adjustment screw backed out too far....Thanks for all the replies...

that could be it, Subaru's tend to be very sensitive to intake path modifications. If there is an adjustment screw, it's for setting boost pressure i think, has nothing to do with the mixture control.

That's almost DEFINITELY the problem. The BOV will cause rich shifts, but I've never heard of it throwing a CEL. The cone filter (AEM especially!) are known for causing misreads in the MAF sensor. Revert back to stock, or buy a Cobb SF, K&N Typhoon, APS, or SPT and reset the ECU and you should be golden

    Solved

Well, I replaced the BOV and it didn't change the way the car ran at all. I was still getting CEL and misfires. Well the other day I found that the car was running almost perfect without the ac on. So I clicked the fan on and turned the ac off and on but it still ran badly. I clicked off the fan and boom, only very slight misfire. Turned off the fog lights and the misfire goes away almost completely. So when I run simple electric stuff it takes power from the ignition = bad spark/run rich/misfire. So, is it the alternator or a short? I know I can test to see but maybe someone else has had this before. Man it runs good with everything off.....

Have you tried the most basic steps of reseting your ecu, and checking your fuses? ( always do these first w/ an electrical problem )

Then take your baby down to autozone and have them do their free electrical testing on her.

Is there any corrosion on your batt contact points? (I had a similar problem w/o misfires in my truck. The truck ran poorly w/ electrical equip on, I replaced the contacts and it was fine)

Are there any other noises coming from the engine compartment besides the misfires?

Yeah, I reset the ECU a few times. No other strange noises except for that it turns over a little slow when I start but it's never not turned over. Battery points are fine but there is an intercooler spray system ala sti installed that added a second motor to the windshield washer system that seems to be wired pretty badly. I'm going to disconnect it and go to the autozone and have them check it out. If it runs well over there then I guess that's the problem. Thanks for your help....
