    Gas milage issue (non subaru)

I have been having a odd issue with my daily driver. It's a 1995 escort with a 1.8 and around 205k on it.

My MPG seems to vary every other tank. Meaning one tank I get 22-24 mpg and the next tank I'll get 33mpg. I averaged 33 mpg for around 3-4 years before.

The car has recently had 4 new plugs and wires. Doesnt show any signs of running weak on power, fuel filter is a year old. Car gets 89 octane and I use the same gas station/pump for each fill up.

It's very odd because it is literraly every other tank. I go 23mpg/34-36mpg/23mpg/34-36mpg.

I have looked for leaks and havent noticed anything. This has been going on for awhile, and before I moved so I doubt anyone is actually taking gas out of it.

    Thoughts?

I had a 1994 Escort LX - I think it was 1.8l, but I'm not positive. It consistantly got 40mpg, which made me love that car so much. Then my friend who sold me the car borrowed it, and totalled it. My wedding gift to her was not going after her insurance and raising her rates.

I'm assuming you are calculating the mpg by doing the math between fill ups?

I am doing the calculations correct.

I dont know what would give such a consistant inconsitant milage issue like that.

You know I thought about that, but it's been happening for awhile and I've since changed residences/job locations so I dont see where that would happen.

As for it being ECU related it's not OBDII even. The ECU doesnt do half as much as it does in newer cars.

It's not missing or anything that I can tell. No CELS. Head was recently machined and new gasket. No leaks noticed under the car.

As for oil changes...I dare not call them regular, but they have been done pretty reguarly since I've had it between 3-5k miles...basically whenever I get around to it.

I had a similar problem on my 91 GT. It turned out to be leaking from one of the connections on the fuel rail. I noticed little puddles of fuel on my lower intake plenum.

I'll have to take a look...the head was recently off, but it started giving me fuel issues before that point.

Kind of at a lost here, I guess something might be up with the MAF or throttle body but it isnt running horrible. It's kind of hard to judge if a car is down on power when it only has 100 to begin with.

It does have the stock cat in there...maybe clogged?

Well, the cat would trigger a CEL and VERY poor performance issues. Try throwing on a fuel pressure gauge, just for giggles. It also wouldnt hurt to clean your MAF sensor.

I was tossing the cat out there since every once in awhile under load I'd get that lovely egg smell.

Possible a bad 02 sensor? I have no idea at this point and I dont know what the ECU in 95 will tell you. I guess it would show a bad 02sensor but I have no idea.
