Does anyone else have the problem of not having ANY oil on there dipstick? i check it on level surfaces after the car sits for about 3 hrs. But when i take the dipstick out theres oil on it so i wipe it down and when i put it back in theres none. maybe a drop at the tip (probably from the sides of the tube while dragging the stick up). Last oil change i put in 4.8 qts and I check my oil bolt and there is no sign of a leak. I topped off with maybe a 1/4 of a quart but still no readings on the dipstick. Anyone know of what the problem might be?

That sounds like you are woefully low on oil! Get it back up to the F mark. You're losing/using oil somewhere... Any blue exhaust?

Sounds like you're really low on oil. I have the opposite problem, there is oil all over the dipstick and it is a pain to get a good reading.

Typically the line for low to the line for full is one quart of oil. You are very low. You should make sure to keep the level at least between low and full.

dang i just topped off with maybe .7 qt and now its at the F mark exact. No blue smoke from exhaust but i did have occasional white smoke from the turbo area. i always thought it was a coolant leak. but its white smoke from around the turbo... could it be from low oil?

No it's not from low oil. It's either atmospheric water condensation evaporating off, an intermittent coolant leak, or oil -- but regardless of the oil level in the sump.

Take note you have an 05 and he has an 02. The 02 and 03s call for 4.8Qts. Not sure if the 04 is 4.2 or 4.8 Anyone?

Either volume will work and neither will harm any year motor. The sumps and oiling system is unchanged; they do recommend a different sized filter but for no reason that'd affect the end user anyway.

If you are adding 4.2 or over but below 5 you're generally fine. You never drain the same amount anyway.

I have an 04 wrx, and the manual does say 4.8 quarts. I too have the annoying dipstick readings that appear to fluctuate. I just changed the oil, put in 4.8 qts, then drive it, let it sit overnight, check stick and it still looks a little low, under the F mark. I dont get why these cars dont show an accurate oil level on the stick. My other cars usually do.

do any of you guys know if the eng oil does anything for the turbo like lube the shaft of the turbo or something? does the turbo use the eng oil for something? because i was way low on oil and i had white smoke coming from the turbo area before. So i topped it off but it was low for about 5 months or something who knows how long (low about 1.2 quarts) whenever i drive the car hard and turn it off i smell the scoop and its really hot and smells like something is burning.

    dipstick readings

hello subie nation! i just changed my plugs,PCV,oil and filter tonight. i have also noticed the strange dipstick readings we all get. hmm. i guess just keep it between the to holes (on the stick) and you should be fine. as mentioned before i think a cold reading would be the most accurate.
