The steering wheel is probaly locked...turn it left and right as you try to turn the car on.

Try shooting some WD40 in the slot. The tumbler is either worn or stuck. If you can't get it to free up, you will have to replace the lock cylinder.

I would say the steering wheel is locked... try turning it a little while you GENTLY turn the key. I would try that before calling anyone... Could save you some $$ but, more importantly some imbarrasment. I had a lady call the shop with the same problem. She paid to have her 05 325i towed in... it was back on the road faster than her face turned red. I didn't have the heart to charge her for more than the tow.

Mike502 is right. It happens to me every so often. Turn the wheel and key gently and it'll go.

If the lock is sticking (not the steering wheel lock) get it fixed ASAP. I had that problem with my MR2 a while back, the lock would occasionally stick and I would have to wiggle the key for awhile before it would finally turn. I didn't get it fixed and one day, no matter how I tried the lock was stuck.

Ended up having to get the car towed to get the lock fixed. $150 tow, $70 to replace the lock cylinder. If I would have gotten it fixed before it froze it would have cost me $50.
