01 jdm sti only .5bar boost???

    Hi,

I have a 2001 jdm sti....its basically all stock. I was using it for almost 6months now with out any problems...until a month a go things start to deteriorate.

First thing i noticed its that...the usually pull i get when i first drove the car isnt the same as it is a few weeks ago. I checked the boost it was still on 1.5bar.

Second i noticed is...i get knock on upper rpms and no pull at all.

Worst of all when i was driving it this morning...the boost only reaches .5bar.

I'm particular with maintenance...and i follow the usual guidelines....I tried logging it with a ecuexplorer and one thing i noticed that is quite abnormal is the fuel pump duty at idle is 33% and mid rpms at 66.5% and at 6000rpm up its pegged at 100%. Could this be the problem?

    I have done the ff..

    1. checked for boost leaks or lose hoses....no leaks.
    2. changed the plugs to a new one.
    3. changed the fuel filter, airfilter, and oil

    but still its the same...

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT ELSE I WOULD CHECK OR DO?

Sorry for a long post....Thanks in advance

How many miles or kilometers are on it? Are you getting any CEL's? You do a compression test?

    My thoughts would be:

    1. Worn out or damaged turbo
    2. Bad fuel pump
    3. bad/clogged injectors
    4. boost leak/ bad BPV
    5. Bad CAT

    ....

    Thanks for the reply..

Its, 25K on the odometer...I'll check the things that you listed.

Stock the WRX and STI came with a By Pass Valve-BPV not BOV-Blow Off Valve.

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust?
    Any computer tuning?

Checked everything on the wastegate area...no leaks...no nicks...everthings connected.

I tried the hard reset....here's what happened....Boost went up tp 1bar for a few runs. After a 20-30mins of driving with intermediate boost....it went back to .5bar. I can still hear knock on the higher revs.

im gonna pull down the injectors tom and have it cleaned...if the problem still persists then i guess i'l check the pump. Im leaning towards a fuel system problem since i didnt change anything on the car and on low rpms i get low throttle response...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

is the BPV located on the right side of the IC?...I dont have any means of computer tunning...only datalogging via ecu explorer..

Stock exhaust pipes...i only changed the muffler to an APEXI N1

    log..

I took a log via ecuexplorer...any inputs?...before i dive in and remove my pump...

by the way its a 2nd gear pull, engine temp is at normal operating temp, peak boost was 1.2bar with slight knock on top.

Well first off, peak boost on the wrx is realized in a WOT 3rd gear pull.

Sounds almost like you might have fallen victum to the removed restrictor pill.

read this thread and check for your pill.

    Restrictor Pill

If it is absent it will cause boost spiking that causes the engine to knock and the ecu to compensate.

    update

I checked the fuel system....everyting is ok. Fuel pump pressure is good. changed the fuel filter....cleaned the injectors. Same scenario.

I checked the restrictor pill and its there...

I changed the plugs to a new one....

    double/tripple checked for leaks.....none...

Here's what the car does when i try a hard reset....car has a low throttle response on 1000-3500 rpm....sounds like its missing firing....i hear backfires and popping sound....then car will make power around 4000rpm and boosting up to 1.2 bar. with knocks on hi revs.....after a few runs....it goes on limp mode. .5bar all the way....and backfire is more prominent.

So is it time to check if i jump a tooth on the tbelt?..

    ANY MORE INPUTS???

********** You should do a compression check on all cylinders*********

    * Timing belt ever been replaced? If not replace it and check timing.

*have it smoke tested for boost leaks. The smoke machine will find leaks you cant see.

    *have your injectors flow tested

    * What type of air filter are you using? If its an oil impregnated one Clean your MAF.

    * Is your oil contaminated? Smell like gas or is it milky like water?

*is there oil in your coolant?

Could be a ton of things, but if it isnt a boost leak or fuel system, EM or igntion system, my two best guesses would be:

    1. Blown Head gasket

    2. Blown motor ie. cracked piston/hole in piston or bent valves or both.

*You should do a compression check on all cylinders-->I dont have the tool right now but i'll be able to borrow a comp tester this weekend.

    * Timing belt ever been replaced? If not replace it and check timing-->Not yet, i'll order the parts tom.

*have it smoke tested for boost leaks. The smoke machine will find leaks you cant see-->ok got it.

*have your injectors flow tested-->i just had it sonic cleaned and flow tested readings are good.

    * What type of air filter are you using? If its an oil impregnated one Clean your MAF.-->KNN drop in filter...yes i'll clean the maf...can i use an injector cleaner to clean the maf?

    * Is your oil contaminated? Smell like gas or is it milky like water?-->oil is fine no odd signs

*is there oil in your coolant?--> none.

Thanks so much for your reply....i'll keep you posted.

No to clean your MAF I would use this stuff by CRC:

    http://www.amazon.com/CRC-Mass-Flow-.../dp/B000EGH57G

You can get it at mots auto parts places. I have seen it at Kragen and autozone and NAPA/riebes
