    Exclamation over heated??

so i was driving to work today after lunch and cruising at about 70 +- and my car got hot all of a sudden, boiling hot, i pulled over let it cool for about 15-20 mins and limped back to work, now that it has been sitting for a while i started it and topped it off and now it seems to be doing fine. does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem was?

Possibly a thermostat. How many miles are on your car, and how is your heat working?

my guess is the thermostat, i'd start there. Something that out of nowhere seems like the t-stat stuck.

but after it got hot it has been getting hot all the time now when driving it, it does not get hot at idle but as soon as i start driving it the temp starts going up. We replaced the t-stat and it still does it my budddy owns an auto shop and he drove it a couple times and it was getting hot intermittently and the car only has 56k on it and only 6k on the new motor (replaced before i bought it) we were thinking head gasket but there are no signs of it, no water in oil, no water bubbling out of fadiator when cap is off, so the only thing we can think of is the water pump, is there anything else it could be?

I had a problem with this after replacing coolant in the bugeye. Since the coolant system is pressurised, as much as a cup low on coolant can cause problems. I was 2 cups low on fluid after a timing belt replacement and had this problem even though it seemed full when I added coolant initially.

You said the coolant system hadn't been opened.

    Burp the system.

it hadn't been opened until i got it to my buddies shop and we checked it out, added coolent and burped it, still had the problem so replaced the t-stat, and now still have the problem and both fans are working properly.

1: Have you tested the coolant for hydrocarbons?
2: Is the water pump leaking by the weep hole at all?
3: AT what temperature is the fan coming on? (exactly. Plug into high end scanner for this info)
4: Is the thermostat in backwards?
5: Is the radiator showing any signs of blockage?
6: How well is the heat working?

Also, if the engine was replaced, the coolant system was opened.
