    white smoke - a stranger - AAA

ok, so today i'm 24 hrs into having my new Silver 05 STI. i'm heading up the 101 freeway in Los Angeles en-route to one of my fav canyons – Kanan Dune. i pull into a gas station for some h2o. there i see a blue 04 STI. i pull into a parking space next to it, only to see the sube blowing a lot of white smoke. the owner gets out and asked if that was him. i said - hell yes. he said he car had been running a bit “weird” on the freeway, and he just pulled in there to see what was up.

short story.... he was 90 miles from home (Orange County) and had no idea what the deal was with his STI, no triple A to road side assist. adding to his problemos - his STI is 2 months over his 3 year warranty. i have AAA Plus (allowing for 4 - 100 mile - tows every year.) i called up AAA to hook him up and....well, lets just say – they showed up to tow him back to the OC free of charge.

just for future sake. what would cause that. his symptoms were a rocking motor with 30K miles on it. not rocking as in awesome. but really rocking. almost like he had bad motor mounts. the smoke was white, not the normal bluish tint (like oil issues). my diagnosis was his motor mounts are causing flex in the motor area causing a break in some gasket or seal...creating "weird" freeway driving and spy hunter like smoke. am i near right??

also, and more importantly. he said that he burns 1 qt of oil every week. and he is constantly adding oil. he has been told that is normal. is that normal??? doesn’t sound like it - for any car, needless to say a 3 year old sube.

He was FULL of thanks. I said, no worries and luck he wasn’t in an EVO cause he would have been stranded.

We laughed and then I hit the canyon to light it up…only to get caught in summer, bumper to bumper traffic. It took me an hour and 15 mins to go 30 miles. Gotta love L.A.

Probaly a blown motor at that point. The oil leak could have been a blown ring due to improper break in. Ran motor low on oil and something broke lose inside of it. More then likely cyl #4. Nothing to do at that point but get towed. No highway trouble shooting.

White smoke typically = coolant in the combustion chamber. If the exhaust has a bit of a "sweet" smell to it that is a tale tail sign. Probably a blown head gasket or crack in the engine block. I would go with a blown head gasket. Also this would cause the engine rocking as water and ethelyne glycol does burn real well.

I would check the the seals in the turbo are ok. I've seen cars smoke up like a BBQ with the engine running strong. Actually it was an old Chrysler acclaim. The turbo was busted, and the seals were leaking oil directly to the exhaust and it looked like it was a fog machine.

    Something to consider.

Edit : BTW, the smoke was solid grey (kinda white). No blue smoke like when the valve seals leak.

well to kind of tag along and hijack a bit, I have an 06 wrx that is doing something similar. it has a greyish bluish smoke only right after startup and thats it. nothing else. untill it sits again and I start it up. but as soon as I drive a bit it stops. it also only smokes when there is some load on the engine. It doesnt usually do it idling. I pulled the splugs and did a basic comp test and all looks fine. even comp across all cylinders and no fouling whatsoever on the plugs. could it be a turbo issue? if seals are a consideration how does one check those to see if there is a leak at that point.
thanks for any advice or answers. I am pulling my hair out right now. the dealership has basically told me to get bent because I have an AP and tbe. stage 2 . also I notice no measurable oil loss at oil change.
