I hate to chime in on an older thread, but I have recently been having the exact same problem. I haven't gotten it up on jack stands yet to get a good look, but from what I can see nothing obvious is amiss with the suspension.
Anybody got any ideas?

Hey guys, I'm fairly new around here, hoping someone could answer a few questions.
I just picked up an '02 WRX sedan and have noticed a creaking sound coming from the front axle area. I did a search on this forum, and most mentioned the sway bar links, but none of the threads matched my problem exactly.
It happens when I'm on the brakes, just about to stop, and also when I'm just creeping forward at slow speed (i.e. in traffic).
I've never owned an AWD car before (always had RWD), so I'm not sure what noises are normal and which aren't.

Possibly not enough grease on your sway bar.
2006 WRX TR: TurboXS RFL-Ti TBE, GR+ Pro Coilovers and all supporting suspension mods, Stage 3 block with CP pistons, 18g, P&L FMIC, deatschwerk 750cc injectors, PPG gears
I put some grease on the sway bar bushings, but it only helped a little. I'm getting the feeling that it's my brake pedal that's making the noise. It definitely feels like the sound is more central than the sway bar bushings, and it's more obvious when I'm on the brakes.
I have been driving with this noise for a while now I have inspected and re-inspected the front right wheel assembly and didn't find anything loose. I am tempted to take apart the whole right assembly but can't seem to find the time to do it. Its also driving me nuts and it sounds exactly like you guys are describing. Hopefully some one has any other ideas as to what is going on.
