Here's a good thread on the subject. It should give you plenty of info and some folks to ask more specifics on whether it's useful for the WRX or not.

Oh I see. A collector for the PCV. Actually - this can be a very useful modification. The flat engine generates alot of crankcase pressure, and leaking oil seals can result, so a rather liberal PCV system is in place. If you like to get on it, and im sure most of you do, this may keep your air filter from getting all gummed up.

IIRC Austin has had a bad experience that may have been at least incidentally related to his catch can installation. This has been chronicled at www.nasioc.com.

Well, from the information there, I would say this was problem with the PCV itself if anything. As long as there is no excessive backpressure in the system - it shouldnt cause that kind of smoking.
