Air Conditioning, what should I do?

Good Year told me my Expansion Valve is stuck?????

    Part is $189.99

    Freon $229.99

This is wear it gets very strange...Labor... $500.00

Almost 1 k to get freon moving the correct way again.

He said it is barried way in the dash somewhere????

Where is a good place to get the part?

I live in San Diego and have had good luck with getting things fixed in Mexico.

A friend of mine found an air conditioning repair shop down there....what do you think?

In Mexico they make five bucks a day. I would like to get it fixed for five bucks vs. $500

This is a common fault and I've seen two more bugeyes with the same issue as yours years ago while visiting the dealer. For that kind of money, you may as well take it to the dealer. I also think the price quoted for refrigerant is high. Labour is on the high side too. Try a specialist AC shop and/or a Subaru dealer of good repute in your area.

R134a- the kind of refrigerant currently used in automotive air conditioning is retailing in repair shops at between $20 - $35/lb. A WRX should only use about 2 lbs. The $225 may have been a service price(parts and labor) to evacuate and recharge the AC system, but even at that sounds high. Going rate for that is approx $150-$175.

Sorry, I'm not at work to look up labor time and list price on replacing the expansion valve.

EDIT: you are in Cali... the world's most expensive place to get a car fixed, so that will have an effect on pricing.

So is there a good place on the internet to buy parts like this expansion valve? Or is this a dealer only part?

Are you planning on trying to install it yourself? If so, remember you will need a refrigerant evacuation machine to properly remove the old freon and any air in the system before you can refill the system. You will also need to add the correct amount of freon- it is possible to overfill it.

As far as a good place to buy the part, I don't know of one specifically..

I was thinking about taking the part to Mexico. My friend found a place down there that has an evacuation machine.
