Oil consumption - more or less normal?

I am running with Mobil 5w30 M1, full synth oil. I have notice that I will usually need to add at least 1 quart, maybe a tad bit more in between oil changes. Car runs great other than this weirdness. I know that somewhere in the manual is states some regular oil consutption is normal.
What is everyone else finding with there subies?

If you do a bit of searching you will find that there are many people that have consumption problems with Mobil 1. Many switch away to another synthetic and the consumption stops. I use Castrol Syntec 5w 30 and have 0 consumption between changes. I typically check my oil once a week and never notive the level going down. So it gets my vote.

It might be worth your time and effort to try a differnt synthetic next oil change and see of it changes. I doubt there is a problem. It may just not be the "right" oil for your car.

if your car never uses oil at all theres probably something wrong with it in my opinion, or its just a brand new car

Hmmm. Thanks fellas. I have read the post on M1, and it has made me nervous. And I will definatly try out a different brand of synth next oil change.

Mobil 1 is a true synthetic while most others are not. Because of this the molecules of the oil are smaller and get into spaces "normal" oil wouldn't be able to...especially around the turbo bearings. Its normal to have a bit of consumption with Mobil 1....although after following the Subaru head mechanic (not SOA manual) for the break-in, here I am at 100k miles and I don't have ANY consumption using Mobil 1.

...using a more viscous grade like 10w rather than 5w will also reduce consumption.

Yo Blarg...thanks man, a friend mentioned going to a thicker grade as well. I am in Cali if that matters...we do not see the crazy cold weather, nor do we see the nasty hot hot weather.
And thanks for the oil link...I have not seen that one. It crazy how a little oil consumption and a few posts can make a man crazy.

i'm not sure if oil consumption on a synthetic is supposed to be normal. i'm on motul and have no consumption whatsoever... maybe its luck, but i don't know. i just attribute it to following break-in guidelines and using a true synthetic.

My car went through a quart of Mobil 1 5W30 in the oil change period, I moved to the Castrol Synthetic blend and I didnt loose any oil between the oil change period. I didnt realize the mobil 1 was a full synthetic. Thanks for the info.

Just thought I'd ad my experience...

I'm at 30k now on my 04 WRX. I've been using Mobil 1 5w-30 ever since 2000 miles and I've never had any consumption problems until my last oil change at 28k. I was a little over a quart low, so I've been monitoring it a lot more lately.

I use M1 in all my vehicles.
    No consumption to speak of.
I am a break-in fanatic on new engines BTW and it seems to pay off down the road.
Only word of advice is that I use 10-30 8 months out of the year and 5-30 in cold months.

The M1 5W-30 and 10W-30 seem to be from the same base stock. The 5W-40, 0W-40, 15W-50 and 10W-40 bike seem to be from different base stock. My bugeye used more 5W-30 than 10W-30, especially if the 10W was spiked with 15W-50. It used no 5W-40 and I don't know how my current M1 will fair (gone to 0W-40). All motors consume oil, whether it can be measured by the driver or not, and use is not linear usually. New motors have irregular use patterns, as do motors switched to a different oil initially. Many motors consume more oil toward the end of a drain cycle than in the beginning.
