    oil smoke Pt.2

Took my wrx into shop for 30k service. Had oil smoke coming out of hood again. Last time the dealer spent 5 hours on it and found nada. This time they Said that they found gease oozing from my right outer boot as I had suggested before. They also said that my turbo was shot and they called SOA and were told that it was because I was using Mobile 1 oil. They are replacing both items under warrenty. They also said I have to (suggested) that I go back to stock oil to maintain warrenty. In other words no Synthetic according to SOA. This sucks. My car is less than one year old.

No correlation between failure and oil used. You can use any API oil of the correct type/viscosity (see owner's manual) and maintain your warranty agreement obligations. SOA have stated as much not only in the manual, but also in messages re-posted by members here; see the oil change sticky thread (FAQ). Try to get them to put in writing that Mobil's product is unsuitable for warranty purposes if you're curious (or just nod and go along with them in a "let's be kind to the natives" way and avoid upsetting them...).

They got the smile and nod. At least I got a new turbo out of it. The mechanic let me look at the old turbo and it did have oil in the intake and the blades were pretty dark in the compressor section. They said they wre going to do whatever it took to stop my smoking problem.I'm sure the dealer was doing his best. BTW I got a msg from SOA and it was the same as the others verbatim. So I guess that someone was stretching a point. Got the car back today and it runs great. The mech did say that my car ran strong and he saw that it was making 15 lbs of boost.Said it was "unusual".
