Hi guys, I have a 2002 WRX and about two weeks ago I noticed the oil was low, so I decided to change it. I put Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage (5w-30) into it, as well as a Fram Tough Guard oil filter. Here I am a week or so later, checked my dipstick and it was about at the same level as before ; almost to the empty dot. I don't understand, I have been checking the oil every other day since I changed the oil and it was perfect in terms of quantity and quality. I check it about three days later and it still check out on quality, but not quantity. I sometimes smell something like oil or gas, however I don't know if that is normal to smell with a catback exhaust or not. Anyone know anything I don't?:shakehead:
You need another mechanic. Ring issues and blowby on the level you are having issues with will cause notable results on a compression and leak down test
To anyone still following this post, many thanks. The verdict is that the valve cover gaskets, cam seals, drain pan, and some seals in the timing case are all bad. The leak has gotten bad to the point where oil is starting to leave marks on my driveway I have a couple questions I am hoping someone has answers to: For one, when I get under the car and look at where the timing case cover meets the block, there is a small oil stain near the middle. Would that denote the crank seal? Also, is it really necessary to do the water pump and belts if I am taking the timing case off? Secondly, if the drain pan needs to be replaced should I go with an STI one or just get an OEM WRX drain pan? Being that the STI drain pan was designed for the 2.5 liter, is it even compatible with the 2 liter ej205?

No, but I did. I'm on my 3rd or 4rth water pump; both the original Subaru and a Gates failed at 60K each, so I'm using an Aisin now. If the water pump fails you may as well do a timing belt job, and if the timing belt is due you may as well do the water pump -- provided you are keeping the car.

You mean the sump? The only reason to replace it is if it's cracked or bent, and thus leaking. Otherwise it's a matter of some sealant (I don't even think there's a gasket). It's a pain with the crossmember though.

A thought: if you do remove the sump, maybe replace the oil pickup as the tube brazing can fail leading to engine failure. Neither common nor impossible and you'd have it apart anyway so...
Right, which is located inside the sump and then running out of it into the motor correct? The reason I am asking is because I see oil around the drain plug and that line running out of the sump is soaked in oil. Is that the sign of a failing pickup tube? If not, should I replace it with my drain pan (sump) anyways just to be safe? On the other hand, with the water pump, does the thermostat absolutely need to be done as well, and if it needs to be done, should I go with OEM or a performance one such as the Mishimoto? Last question, sorry, what about radiator hoses? If they're not bad/worn/leaking do they need to be replaced as well? Thanks again sorry for the bombardment just new to this is all...
