just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction to figure out how to remove a AVCS sprocket on a 09 WRX for cam seals & re-install the sprocket. I understand that the 10mm hex/alan is tough to remove some times but once the bolt is loose , does the sprocket with the attached AVCS just slide off by hand ? its a brittle piece of material , i couldn't see a puller working on it unless under the AVCS theres threaded bolt holes....? Is there key stock in the cam shafts them self's to line the pulley back on in the same position it was taken off to then be able to line up the timing marks (driver side upper clock wise & driver side lower counter clock wise ? the passenger should not move unless physically moved.....
any help would be greatly appreciated !! ive been down now for a while
87 views & no one has any insight as to where a guy could look to find this info or knows weather the cam gears are key slotted to the cam shaft & once unbolted can be removed by hand or puller ?
Again sorry Nick I don't have an AVCS car. I removed all my gears easily by hand once the bolt was broken loose. To break the bolt lose I used a Snap-On 10mm hex/allen and I used the belt-tied method. There is also a tool. Since you do have AVCS your gears will look like this: STI Cam Sprocket/Gear Removal?? - NASIOC
so you might find help there if you've not already looked.
Also you can buy this: Company 23 Cam Gear Removal Tool - Daily Driven Power
or give Subaru more money: http://subaru.spx.com/index.asp
though again, I did not.
Note that people do say a not-so-fancy 10mm will not hold up and I don't know if that's true since I was fortunate enough to use a fancy one.
Hi Guys and Gals. I work on Subarus a lot. I am a ASE Master. I made a video that solves removing/installing the Camshaft Sprocket fastners very easily with no failures to date for me. Its simple, its fast and no special tools are needed. The video is only a couple minutes long. I hope it helps someone else out. Here is the link.
