I bought a 2006 WRX wagon about a month ago, it was running when I purchased it, but very rough at idle. Under load it seemed fine. Let me say first that this is my first subaru, and that I know enough about working on cars to be dangerous, but I am determined to get this car running the way its supposed to and then may even attempt some of these mods I hear everyone talking about.
First things first though, I will start from the beginning and I hope some of you experts out there might be able to give me advice on what to do. So like I said the car was running when I bought it, but rough idle. The check engine light was on, and the only code was for the upstream O2 sensor. I decided I would take it into the nearest Subaru dealer which was in Cumming, GA. I paid them $150 to give the car a look over and let me know if there were any immediate issues that I should address. After they looked at it they gave me a report saying the O2 sensor needed to be replaced and that one of the valve cover gaskets was leaking a little oil. So, I am thinking great no big deal, I can handle those things, and maybe the rough idle is being caused by the O2, and I will clean the MAF. I leave the dealership and about a mile down the road in traffic, the car stalls and radiator fluid is blowing out of the upper radiator hose. I pull over get towed to the nearest parts store that has a replacement upper hose, replace the hose, refill the radiator, and drive the rest of the way. The temp gauge was reading higher than normal, and I figured it was just because the cooling system needed to be purged. I purged the air out of the system and topped off the coolant. From that point on the car has not been drive able. The car will start, and it will idle rough until it starts to warm up then it stalls. Tried to drive it and it will go a little then die, what mean by die is either stall or just putter along hesitating and backfiring, and pegging the thermostat. Then if it sits for a few minutes it will do kind of the same thing.
What I do not understand (actually there are many things I do not understand)why, if and how the cooling system could be affecting the idle and causing the backfire/misfiring?
Anyway here is what I have done so far:
- replaced both O2 sensors
- cleaned MAF
- reset the ECU
CEL went out for a little while, but is now back on and the code is P0301 or cylinder #1 misfire., the O2 sensor code is no longer showing.
So I am at a loss as to what I should do next, any ideas would be greatly appreciated....I really loved driving this car for the week that it was drivable, and am looking forward to getting it back on the road.
Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this, and go easy on me if I did something really stupid....
