Whining noise from transmission or gear box?

I have a 03 WRX and am having a strange whining noise when I down shift or let off the gas. Also when I hit about 60 mph I hear the same noise consistently. I can feel it the shift knob which is why I was presuming the gear box. Any comments would be helpful

The shift knob will always vibrate. Wait until you get harder bushings in the drivetrain
