    Fan-like noise at higher rpm.

Hi, I'm new to the Wrx and these forums. I just bought a 2012 wrx and noticed the first time I actually pushed the car I got a almost Fan-like noise at a higher rpm (4k plus) and it's when the car is under load only. It's a steady, non Winding up sound. I have been searching the forums for the last few hours, can't find this exact problem, my amateur conclusion would either be turbo bearing (although turbo feels ok) or maybe a fan? Does one of the electric fans kick on briefly when the car is pulling hard? Thanks in advance.

Revise* After driving the car to work this morning the sound is definitely "winding up" and is now starting at around 2500rpm when I am accelerating. Almost sounds like an electric RC car taking off from a start. From what I understand the turbo noise from a bone stock WRX should not be too noticeable so I am ruling out that this sound is normal.

It very well could just be turbo noise.

Anyway you can get some audio of it?

It could be transmission whine. Is there a short throw shifter on the car? If so, a lot of people report an increase in interior transmission noise.

It could also just be some intake or turbo noise, as michaelwfox said.

No short throw, bone stock. Talked to the Subaru dealership regarding the warranty, apparently turbos fall under the 50k mile "emission" warranty here (not 60k drivetrain). Drove the car into the dealership with 49,994 miles on it so if it's the turbo it's covered. LOL. I will let you guys know what it was, but it definitely got louder over the last day or two... if it's the normal turbo noise I'm going to feel like an idiot.

Whole new Turbo required, dealer is taking care of it. I will ask more questions when I pick it up.

Dang! Crazy to think you only has 7 miles before it was out of warranty. Glad you're able to get it fixed!

Interested to hear what they say broke.

Thanks dude! I was literally odometer watching, if It got too close to 50k I was going to have it towed into the dealership!

I'm having this exact noise too. It just started two days ago and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. The noise is only when I'm in the boost, did't sound like normal turbo noise. I have a 2012, and only 19,000 miles. Do you think the turbo could be garbage already?

Well I'm guessing from the OP it wouldn't be out of the question since his went pretty early as well. Chances are higher it's a boost leak at the throttle body Intercooler hose too. Those things are garbage and should be the first mod anyone does.
On the throttle body side the inner part comes apart and when I changed mine both sides were completely torn

I don't have one yet so I wouldn't know if even a small amount would show on the gauge, just a heads up....because those hoses are straight junk from the factory and have been reported here to be loose.
But go to the dealer and see what they can do (mind you they might try giving you the run around a time or two as some dealers do not like doing warrenty work)

If it was a boost leak it would definitely reflect in the boost pressure. If you have a gauge you would clearly not be able to hit peak boost.
