long story short, i've had an endless amount of problems with my car since i bought it

    thinking about selling the WRX

and today, as im driving it home from yet another trip from the mechanic, it starts smoking from the cat next to my engine along with an unpleasant smell. i did see some water as well around the same spot. my initial thought is that the cat was bad, anyone have any advice?

I've never heard of a cat doing this before... unless oil was flung onto it and is burning. What sort of work was done at the mechanics shop?

what did it smell like? did it smell like burning oil? There very well could have been some sort of fluid flung onto the exhaust during the process.

How does your passenger side inner CV boot look? When mine got loose, it flung grease on the downpipe and made bad smells. It was an obvious problem because of the accumulated grease on parts near it.
