Noise during startup -- what is this?

I've had my 2014 WRX for about a month and just the past two days I noticed a fairly loud "hum" coming from the engine bay during initial startup. It lasts for about 10-15 seconds, then shuts off. I think it is coming from this component (see red arrow in picture), which has an electrical connector on it. Seems to be some sort of pump or fan or something like that. But I haven't heard it running for the past 3 weeks. It just started yesterday.

It has been VERY cold around here for the last 3 weeks... around 0 degrees F. But the last 2-3 days have actually warmed up quite a bit and it was 45 degrees today. Normally I would expect "weird noises" on the COLD days, not the warmer days.

Also, this only seems to happen after the car sits all day or overnight. I do not hear the noise if I let it rest for an hour and then restart the car, for example.

Can anyone tell me what part this is and what it does? Why would it be running now, just all of the sudden?

That seems to be a smog-related air pump. I don't know why it only became audible recently though.

That's interesting. I agree that I don't know what made it start getting noisy all of the sudden.

But also, *SHOULD* it be audible? I mean, maybe I just overlooked the noise before? I don't know what is considered "normal" for this.

You're fine. It's because of the cold. My car made noises during start up. And the "humm" or "whine" like noise is probably the Timing Belt.

After searching around for the secondary air pump, it seems that a lot of people have issues with it. I guess it's "normal" and I'm not going to worry about it right now.

That being said, I'm still puzzled as to why I haven't heard it in the last several weeks at temperatures BELOW ZERO, but all of the sudden it started making noise yesterday and today which are the WARMEST days we've had in the past month. Makes no sense.

I just bought a new 2014 wrx hatch in January and have been experiencing the same noise, I believe. It is very audible at start up after the car has been sitting over night or while at work during the day. It sounds like a loud hum and then like you said maybe 15 seconds or so it sounds like something closes and the sound goes away.

I have not tracked down where the sound is coming from but I will pop the hood before startup tomorrow morning and see is my sound is coming from the same place.

Since its under warrenty I was considering bringing it up to the dealership but if the sound is normal I dont want to look like an idiot trying to explain it to them.

If something is not mentioned in the owner's manual and not explained to you during the new-sale-tour of the car, you cannot be expected to know it. I'd not worry about their impression of you and I'd ask them to look into it.
