Subaru probably figured we'd notice when we were out without a light to tell us

Yep, it got my attention then!

(for values of `then` where the roads are covered in melting snow and salt water and I'm 30 minutes from home...).

Now I know the reservoir can hold an entire bottle of washer fluid.

Never owned a car that told me I was out of washer fluid, nor did I really see that as a necessity. I hope you don't use the oil "idiot light" to remind you to put oil in the car...

My GF's xv crosstrek tells her when her washer fluid is getting low, so it is possible the new WRX might have that feature as well...As I eluded to earlier, I think it is completely unnecessary though

Idiot light for washer fluid? Seriously? It takes all of 2 seconds to look at the reservoir when you have the hood popped. It's opaque, look at it.
