Split and out the top does work. "Easy" is relative. Depends on your roof, your hoist, and your lifts.

yeah i can get a hold of a two post hoist so lifting car isnt a trouble im doing a complete wrx conversion on a fwd impreza so ive got to use front and rear cross members anyway so i think droping out the bottem all intact could be the best option?

Never done that. Split - motor top - gearbox bottom I know works.

yeah ive done motor out the top but never removed trans before. i cant see why it wont work dropping them both out the bottem just leave engine on cross member mounts and un bolt cross member from the chassis then lift car off the motor and tranz? and do the opposite when i put it in the new shell

This is how I've done it.. but supposedly you can drop the motor out the bottom if you have to.
