    Engine coolant question.

Does anyone else go through coolant like its goin out of style? At my last service my coolant was over the full line and now 1600 miles later its below the fill line while the engine is cool. I havent had a chance to check under the car after its been sitting since i just noticed this. Ill be checkin for drips over the next few days.

No. Your hose clamps might be loose (causing a leak). Check the clamps to make sure they are tight, and look for any pin holes in the hoses.

What ^he said.. I don't think I've ever had to add coolant to either of my bugeyes.. only when doing the flush.

look for coolant build where 11blacksti said to look for coolant leaks. also double check the fluid level with the vehicle warmed up at operating temperate.
inspect the radiator cap for clogging around the valve and gasket along with debris in the reservoir and reservoir hose.

I checked where i park at home this evening and nothing is on the ground. Also when the engine is at temp the level is about a 1/3 over the low line. I always pay attention to the temp guage and it hasnt been any higher than normal either. Maybe thats just where its always been and i just now noticed it?

Definitely wait till the engine is cool. If not you risk burning yourself.

ya. refill the reservoir and the radiator when the engine is cold. at work I always turn the car on when refilling the radiator so any coolant gets sent through the whole system

Every time you checked the reservoir was it when the engine was cold? The coolant in the reservoir will be at different levels when the engine is hot & cold. Naturally when the engine is hot the coolant expands & the level in the reservoir will be more than what it is when the engine has been allowed to cool.

I don't know if this has any relevance: when I got my WRX it had 30K mls, and was 3 yrs old. Modded. The coolant reservoir was empty, bone-dry. Radiator and turbo reservoir where completely full, no air gap. Topped off the coolant reservoir, that vanished over several days. Filled up again, from then on it stayed right there. My guess is that there was some air pockets left in the system, they worked their way out over time. Never had issues with temp or otherwise. Since then I have not seen any loss, winter or summer.

Really suprised no one has said to check your oil..... When's the last time you changed it?

Report back with foamy oil... or report back what the dealer says with their OCI info

Well, if the coolant goes into the oil, not so good... I won't even consider that!

Not saying it is, just a possibility. These cars are a hoe to burp... especially with an aftermarket t-stat.

Even with no coolant in the overflow reservoir it may still be full. The reservoir is just for that, overflow.

yes but that fluid also does make its way back into the system. its for overflow when it gets hot. id rather it be above the full line hot a little bit then there not be enough coolant in the car at all you know?
