    Help with CEL?

Hey everyone, I have recently purchased a 2002 WRX with 219k and after about 2 weeks of regular driving my CEL came on. First it came on while I was driving it blinked maybe 5 times then turned off, could it possibly be a misfire? and after that happened I went home and turned it off for about an hour. After letting it sit I came back and started it up and the CEL was on and has stayed on. I work next to a Napa autoparts store and hooked up their OTC Nemisys reader and it asked me for a "dealer authorization code"; so if anyone happens to know the codes I could use that would be great. Also i have oil on top of my engine and can't seem to find where its coming from (I want to clean up the oil to find out but dont know the best way to do so, engine cleaning guide?), and could these issues be related?
BTW I am new to the forum and am just seeking help to keep my bugeye running in top condition and help would be great as far as things to watch for and things to upkeep. Thank you.

***How to Ask a Technical Question!**

Any generic OBDII code reader/scanner can read the codes. Not sure why that particular scanner can't. There is nothing fancy about the Subaru OBDII connection/accessibility. My $40 Actron scanner does not require a "dealer code".

    Cleaning the engine is simple:
    1. By engine cleaner/degreaser at autoparts store (find one safe for aluminum)
    2. Read directions on can
    3. Follow directions

Thanks, I got the reader to work, and it was a misfire 4 code that was throwing the CEL on, I think maybe its the coil pack so I'm going to replace them. i watched a few videos online that people have had the same issue but mine is no where near as persistant and after clearing the code it hasn't come back on.. yet. so if it happens again i believe that should be my next step.

Or you swap places with another coil pack and if the misfire DTC changes to the cylinder with the swapped pack then you know it's the coil pack as opposed to just throwing parts/money at the car without verifying the actual problem. I wrote a "sticky" at the top of the page on common issues and solutions for misfires.

IF YOU HAVE A MISFIRE CODE ,PLEASE READ THIS!!!
