Cam gear biting into timing cover?

On a whim today, I decided to take the two side timing covers off and take a look instead of eating lunch like a normal person. The belt itself looks pretty new as I suspected, however, I had noticed an odd sound, similar to an injector tick, but louder. As it turns out, my bottom left cam gear is tearing itself up against the cover! What the hell!?

Has anyone ever heard of this before? I'm extremely confused... and scared.

Post a pic. It definitely should not be hitting the timing cover.

Will do... If the wind dies down a bit, I may take it off again for lunch.

    Sorry, been really busy lately.
My left timing cover was cracked near the inner bottom bolt (which was previously missing). I JB Welded it together, spray-painted the inside, and bolted it back up... Seems to have fixed the issue.

EndlessSea, my injectors are extremely loud as well. I have a few theories as to why, but haven't confirmed anything yet. I will let you know if I do.

I was wondering! There's no way the issue should occur if the cover and the cam gear are both OK. That explains it. I'd keep a very close eye on it and make sure no further cracks occur. If in doubt I'd find a wreck and buy an intact cover set. Timing stuff makes me nervous. Good luck.
