hey i have a my13 wrx and i noticed today when i braked hard i get this awful thudding and almost like cracking noise. i do get vibration from the brake pedal
is this normal for the abs to react like that or should i be taking it to the dealer to check it out.
I wouldn't expect any noise with it personally. Normally its just a pulsing or a "kick back" type feeling. You should probably get that looked into in my opinion, but if the dealer is far away, feel free to wait for some other opinions.

Did you notice this just today,after driving in the snow? Check to see if there is any snow lodged in the suspension or brakes. That can sometimes lead to vibrations in the pedals & steering wheel. The working of the ABS is also quite violent ,as in you can definitely feel it kick in.

I'd guess it's either ABS or snow lodged in the wheel well

no snow but today was the first time i hit the brakes hard
ABS pulses. When you are hitting brakes hard, it will magnify that sound. I'm willing to bet that's what you heard. But if you are concerned, take it to the dealer to be certain.

Take the car someplace with low traction, like sand. Hit the brakes to where the ABS activates. See what that's like, take it from there...

...I know, it's all been blown away with that storm... But that should be somewhere, just go find it...
And in the meantime we got a local to help us out, it seems to be not that hard...
