    Broken turbo?

I started driving home from work today and my '04 WRX started making a horrible rattling sound when I revved the engine over ~2k rpm or so. As I got to the stoplight on the offramp my engine died and the check engine light came on. I was able to get it started back up and I pulled off to the side of the road and opened the hood. The heat shield on the turbo was rattling like crazy and the engine was rocking more than usual. I have read other peoples problems with turbo rattling and it being one thing or another but didn't come across anyone else whose engine actually stopped because of the rattling.

I got the car towed to my mechanic who will look at it tomorrow but I was hoping someone on here might have an idea as to what is going on so I can give the mechanic a heads up. Any help / knowledge would be appreciated. Car has ~135k miles on it and has been running great, just changed my oil last week.

    Thanks for looking!

    Dan

^^^ What he said. Need the code.

It definitely sounds like the turbo is a possibility, but there's a lot of other things it could be too.

Once you know what the code is maybe you'll have a better idea what's going on and of course see what the mechanic says

Hmm...I wouldn't expect a blown turbo to cause an engine to shut down...

Just got a call from the mechanic. Code is P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire....
Says I will likely need an engine rebuild and got a number for a Subaru specialist.
If that is the case I am tempted to just part it out and buy a BRZ.

    Thoughts?

I'd fix the misfire first. Either that or I'll take it lol. Seriously, it could be as simple as a coil pack, or maybe the plug just fell off. Running on three cylinders would make it jump and rattle like you say.

So I got a diagnosis. Severe rod knock. Ended up selling the WRX and bought a BRZ

Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

Sorry to hear it. I was hoping it would be something easy. A BRZ would be nice though!
