I just recently bought an 02 Wrx. Love it, But recently I've started noticing... a 1st gear grind.... Now I've done some searching around the forum, And answers have varied.
Here's what I can tell you:
1.)I dont believe its the clutch, It's not slipping at all, And the whole tranny was replaced at 88k, Cars now at 122k.
2.)The car ONLY grinds into first. Not even all the time, But it still happens enough to bug me. Even if it feels like I've got the clutch jammed to the floor.
3.)Everything else is smooth running, all gears shift smooth just first.
So what do you guys think it is? New fluids? And if so any recommendations? Anything need total overhaul? I love this car, But this grind is frustrating me. I'm taking any suggestions here, Hell if any of you are close enough, come over and take a look, I just want the problem gone. I hate seeing the Subi like this...![]()

Does it grind going into first while your sitting still or just moving? Most wrx that year and a few years later just seemed to do that, mine did. There was nothing wrong with it, just wouldn't allow me to downshift into first at any speed above 5mph.

Lots of them do it once in a while. No idea how to fix it.

In your experience, guys that have had this happen, how much damage is it doing? I dont want to destroy the car. Like I said, only at a stop, from neutral to first.
Does a wrx first gear have a synchro? I've never rebuilt a tranny in one. If so you may just have a bad synchro. Mine only grinded while going into first at like 5+mph

It's hit or miss, sometimes I can knock it down from second easily, sometimes it doesn't want to go, so I don't force it.
Try this: clutch down, shift into 2nd and then straight forward into 1st, with no stop in neutral... Might work to stop the shaft and wheels and not needing the synchro of the 1st gear... But still the recommended fluid change and no brute force shifting.
