12 WRX Whine in neutral and in gear

Hi. New member here. I have a '12 WRX Limited with a mere 928 miles on it. I've had it about a month. Anyways its new and maybe I am just hearing things. I hear a noticeable whine at 2500 - 3000 rpms both while in gear moving and in neutral. I am going to have the dealer look at it but I was looking for ideas since I am new to the WRX world. Thanks for the advice

    P.S. I love the car.

dumb question... is the ac on or wheels turned?

Its not driveline since it does it in AND out of gear (subaru trans are notoriously noisy fyi.. its normal) .. so it has to be something directly attached to the engine.

No. I'm a purist, I love riding with windows down. Oh and i've kept the car below 4 grand per the break-in procedure given by the dealer. Wheels are not turned.

hmm.. dunno. Mine has whined in 1'st through 3'rd since the day I brought it home with 63mi on it... but that's in gear. Whining when not in gear has to be something driven off the engine directly so either alternator, power steering or AC.

when its in neutral and doing it are you moving or still?

Normal! I was concerned when I got mine back in April. I heard whining, grinding, and now I hear rattles. 7500 miles in and still the same sounds and no issue. You get used to it. I still love the car!

These cars are notoriously noisy.. however I'd still wander by the dealer for sake of paranoia alone. Never know, if it is something wrong best to diagnose and fix immediately vs waiting and doing more damage.

likely though, its just a quirk of the car. They have a handful of them Do a short throw shifter/bushings and then a trans mount upgrade and you'd be amazed at how noisy the trans is even when working perfectly normal. I've driven quieter heavy equipment lol.

Did you get a definitive answer on this? I think I'm experiencing the same subtle whine mine can be heard at even lower RPMs though down to around 2000.

Apparently its the turbo. The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a supercharger whine. I called the dealer and thats what they said it probably is. I am surprised at how loud it is considering I really haven't fully opened it up yet and I try to baby it. This is my first turbo'ed car so that gives me an excuse for being such a noob I guess.

Loud turbo noise when you are in neutral? I dunno, I don't really notice any turbo sound unless I'm actually giving it gas and getting into boost.

A turbo shouldn't whine at a stand still.

It may still be a normal sound, but it doesn't make any sense that it would be the turbo. I would insist on them seeing the car and not diagnosing it over the phone

That way, if there is something wrong, you have it documented that you did your part.
