    Help 2002 wrx gone bad!

hello! everbody this is my first post because i live in a town with nobody that knows anything about subaru especially not a wrx.
so thank you so much for any help in advance.
So about a month ago this car was snappy fast and sounds like a monster. the previous owner has done a few modifications. including aftermarket exhaust.
suddenly the car got laggy, doesn't pull very hard for about block off the start
the exhaust isn't low and deep its high pitched and cracking and backfires and sounds like a ghetto honda.
we replaced the air filter which happens to also be aftermarket. it has "aem" intake piping down to bottom right with a conical spectre filter. we went ahead and put a new one on.
    it is a 2002 with 93000 miles.
Please let me know where to go next i am stumped
    thank you

Hi Micahh and Welcome to the Club

Do you know if the car is tuned for the intake?

I'd recommend finding a local tuner and having him check over the tune at least. If you can contact the previous owner, touch base with him on it. You may find some important information there.

The cars are pretty fussy about modifications - most need to be tuned for.

Do you know the full modification list? If not, is there a way you could contact the previous owner to find out?

it has a turbo computer she says but its not active. never was plugged in.
i believe it is stock turbo.

Does it have a boost gauge? If the motor has been rebuilt/replaced and the car has less than 100k on it im gonna assume that it is not tuned for the exhaust or the intake, which will cause all kinds of boosting problems. I bought my 02 wrx already modded, but it wasnt tuned for them and ran really erratically. Once i got a good tune it runs like a dream.

Check the vacuum lines for cracks, especially the ones that go to the turbo and boost control solenoid (its on the passenger side of the engine compartment, right by the strut mount)

    +1

Yup, this really sounds like something a reputable tuner should look over.

Due to the sudden deterioration of performance I think something popped off or broke off. Check your front o2 sensor. This would explain the sound in the exhaust note. Get under the car and under the hood. Take some good pictures while looking for leaks or anything out of the ordinary. Post the pics of the issues you might find.

Once this issue is identified then you can get it tuned. Don't drive the car until you get it fixed.
