    gearbox fluid

I checked out a 02 wrx today, and am planning on picking it up next week. Everything was perfect, except underneath there was a small leak of what the guy said was gearbox fluid. It wasn't dripping, it was just kinda built up on whatever is right behind the oil pan.

anybody have any idea what this leak could be? The car has 110,000 miles.
Looking for an 02-05 wrx in the Michigan area!

The only way to tell is to find the source. Fluids can find their way very far away from the source. I'd make sure you know where it's coming from before you pay anything for the car. The transmission shouldn't have anything leaking from it unless it was missing a cap or there was a bad seal. If it's a bad seal, you could be looking at some very expensive repairs when it goes, and based on your minimal analysis, that could be any time.

Could it possibly be the BOV he has on it leaking oil?

Oh and i think its coming off of the transmission, it looked exactly like this.

BOV won't leak oil. Most commonly the axle seals but if you're not sure, take it to someone who can identify the source before you buy the car.
