03 WRX revs up @ 60mph when accelerating... turbo or intake???

ive owned this wrx for three months. when accelerating in either 4th or 5th gear at around 60 mph the engine revs up jumping from 3k to 6k as if i were im neutral. it startedthis about 1 week ago. the previous owner installed an aftermarket AEM cold air intake. its blue. he gave me a box with AEM cleaning and reoiling products and told me that it needed to be cleaned soon. i havent done so being busy w/ school and work. could this be causing the jump in rev or is it a turbo issue or something else? this is my first subaru let alone wrx so im not sure what it could be. it has 97k miles. thanks

What happens after the "rev"? Could be clutch slipping.

    it is the clutch.

You need a new one. To decide whether or not to upgrade the flywheel, let us know the goals.

really??? damn! i did ride the clutch my first week owning it trying to gun it at a green light. it burned for a day and rode bad for a few then went back to normal until this issue. what is the best clutch to use and will the dealer rape me or should i try to find a local mechanic to do the job?

buy an exedy oem replacement off amazon and decide if you want a new flywheel (probably the best bet) or resurface your existing one. Take it to a reputable Subaru shop and have them do the labor.

    Here is the clutch

And flywheel to go with it

If the clutch goes at 97K miles, it wasn't because you rode the clutch a few times in the last week...

Good choice on ordering the flywheel too. While many shops (and sometimes dealers) will resurface the flywheel if it's not too worn, Subaru does not provide resurfacing specifications, and mandates replacement if the flywheel fails their inspection criteria, so good job on just ordering a replacement now.

I finally found a mechanic to do the job for me. He is charging me $350 to install the clutch and flywheel. The local Subaru dealer quoted me $875 for labor. I just dropped it off and hopefully it will be done by tonight. I will let you guys know what I think of the new feel once I get back into the cockpit. I added pictures of the parts so you guys can see what you'd be getting if you went with exedy from amazon.

Keep in mind that you will probably throw a lot of "Cylinder Misfire" codes with that lightweight flywheel.

If it were my car, I'd have gone OEM / ACT StreetLite, but the Exedy @ ~13lbs isn't that bad.
