I know this is an old thread, but thought I would follow up. I just hit 30k miles, and after replacing the air filter and cleaning the MAF sensor I no longer hear the noise. Acceleration is noticeably better, also. When I took the clips off the air filter case it kind of popped off like it wasn't seated on correctly before. Plus the filter and MAF sensor were filthy, so I think that helped. I now know what the turbo sounds like because I can hear it kick in without that whooshing sound. It definitely wasn't the turbo. My assumption is the case around the air filter wasn't on right before and that was causing additional air to come in. Just a hunch, but all seems to be working fine now.
