    Transmission leak (axle to tranny) question

    I see I have some slight tranny fluid seeping out where the axle goes into the tranny (passenger side). Not much, doesn't drip at all on the garage floor, but I assume the seal is bad.

    So how hard is this to fix (replacing the seal) and what's involved cost wise if I had to have a mechanic do it (ie, is this like a simple fix or is it a tear-down type of deal)?

    I'm replacing the clutch in the near future and might just wait til then. Like I said, it's minor and not losing any fluid.

    Thoughts?

    Looked up the labor time for the seals it says for both its 2.6 hours and doing just the one side is 1.4 hours with a skill level of B. Um to my imagination i would expect some level of difficulty. but nothing a diy kind of person with a brain in their head couldnt fix. and a 6 pack of course.

    I have done many axle seals. there is a seal there and there is also an oring once you get the side gear retainer out. When you purchase and install the seals THEY ARE DIRECTIONAL so make sure you install them the correct way. Subaru has a special tool to unscrew the side gear retainer however i find it pretty useless because it usually hits against the engine cradle and its much easier personally when i use a screwdriver and a hammer. When you reinstall the side gear retainers make sure you coat the threads with anti-seize believe me I have been down this road many times...also since those retainers control your front differential adjustment you have to count the turns when you remove them and reinstall them. its a pretty easy job you just have to know what your doing and it just takes a little bit of time.
