My guess is the check engine light is one or several misfire codes. Which would explain the lack of power, due to not having sufficient octane fuel.

I've had to fill up with non-premium gas in a premium vehicle more than once in my life when I was somewhere in the middle of nowhere that only had regular. I've never had any problems. I just usually put in enough to get me to another station where I can fill it up with the correct fuel.

Plus, the US has a very consistent and reliable fuel supply. For example, in the US when one buys fuel, it's fuel, not petrol diluted with whatever. Low octane in an emergency should be fine. It's just not a good habit.

Exactly what I was thinkin... don't think I have ever come close to "accidentally" filling with 87... and if I did I would be paranoid, would never bee in that kind of rpm range

THe gas just set it off

After taking it in to get the check engine light checked 3 times with no code when they hooked it up, I finally decided to just do a tune up sense i just got the car 2 months ago and see were that got me. I noticed that the dumb ass that had the car before me put motocross restrictor spark plugs in , so i replaced those with double platinum ones, cleaned my mass air flow sensor and replaced the fuel filter.... Now she runs better than ever.

Well no wonder. I don't think I would have gone with the double platinums personally, but at least now you have a well running car again.

Double platinum is what Subaru says to put in an '04 WRX.

The Subaru plugs are common platinum NGK units. Did you see the plug recommendation in writing or were you told verbally? The manual specifies common plat NGKs.
