Can someone define premium fuel for me?

Hello All - I just purchased my first WRX a few days ago and I have an inquiry with regard to premium fuel. I have an '08 WRX (Not-STI). I went to the pump today and was kind of (embarrasingly) confused.

    They had:
    Regular (87)
    Premium (89)
    Supreme (93)

The dealer I bought the car from told me 89 is fine but then again, it wasn't a Subaru dealer so W*F do they know.

What is the recommended octane for the WRX? I read through the manual, searched this forum and google and all I could come up with is; The WRX needs Premium Fuel. Can someone define "Premium Fuel" for me?

    THANKS!

Subaru can. In the US the turbo cars require 91 or higher. From the choices you listed I would use the 93.

Sure. For emergencies: If you are ever hours away from fuel and must fill with lower-grade stuff, an unmodified car will not burst into flames or anything, but the ECU will try to tone itself down as much as possible while the lower-grade fuel is in there, so top off with enough to reach the correct fuel and then fill with the correct fuel.

It should say right on the fuel door what octane gas you should use,91 oct or higher.

    As said, 91+

If you have to go below, as Spiros mentioned, run that until you get access, then fill up with higher-grade. If you know you're going to run into low-quality gas, bring some Torco with you to pour in the tank to bring the octane up.

Premium to me means 93 + when you talk performance, of course when you just talk price 91 sneaks in there too...

    I don't think there is a big price difference between 91 & 93.I just don't get 91 oct where I live,only 93.

Many Sunoco stations upstate carry both 91/93. Not the case there?

I don't have many Sunocos here.Just 2 & they are not nearby.Just for the heck of it I'll check if they have both 91/93 next time I'm in the area.

I filled up just once at a Sunoco while I was driving through Jersey.Other than that I have never used anything but Shell VPower.
