    Check Engine Light Disconnected?

So I went to get my emissions(Utah emission laws suck) done on my 04 wrx and was told that my check engine light was either burnt out or disconnected. Has anyone ever disconnected their check engine light? If so, how do I hook it back up?

Does it come on when you turn the key to ON but do not turn on the motor?

There is a harness in the back of the instrument cluster but I don't know which wire(s) lead from the ECU.

Ok they are right then. See if your ECU has been modified somehow; check the harness there first. Then check for a cut wire behind the instruments I suppose. Never seen that happen.

I'm pretty sure if your ECU is throwing a CEL code, you'd fail em/ins anywhere... I live in Utah as well and believe me there are a hell of a lot stricter laws in other places... Find out why its not comming on and get the code pulled and fix accordingly...

I just hate that I have to do emissions every year. Things always seem to go bad with my car around the time I have to do emissions. My cruise light comes on fine.

I hear ya about having to do it every year, but I hate how they charge over $150 just to get a sticker...lol

Yeah it's ridiculous. My friends from Idaho don't have to do emissions or safety. They just pay 30 bucks a year for taxes. But I guess thats the price for living in Idaho. ha. The cruise doesn't blink when I'm driving. I've had my car for over a year and truthfully haven't had many problems at all until now.
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but where is the ECU and how do I get to it?

Before you get too carried away, just check that the bulb hasn't failed.

Well if you are getting a code from the ecu, then your cruise light would be blinking...
it sound more like to me the light bulb has burnt out, so I'd check that first... that would be nice to only have to pay $30 a year for reregistration instead of the $47 + $150 a year just to be legit...lol the ecu should be on the passanger side behind the dash, but not completely sure about that...

Well I took out my gauge cluster and it doesn't look like any of the bulbs are burnt out. I'm gonna work on the ecu now.
