.... and you're aware of the "fragile driveline" catchphrase associated with the WRX? I'm assuming you have the $6k+ put aside to replace the transmission, differential, and prop shaft components should they break?

SO I wanted a friend to record the launch of my rex yesterday and everything went well till we heard this really loud POP. It happens in the video at 5 seconds. All fours were spinning. the road was concrete so less likely to be a rock. Car drives fine no noises since.

Come to think of it, this is the reason why the WRXs were branded with fragile transmissions. Plenty of members running 320+ wtq on stock 5spds without issues... but every once in a while you get this.
OP, the pop is likely "driveline lash." Count yourself lucky that it wasn't the teeth being stripped off your first cog. I wouldn't do it again.

What I saw in the video was precisely what is killing WRX transmissions. While people can launch their cars and that's true that it's not really a big deal if it's done once and a while...if you don't do it well it can kill your tranny. What the video sounds like to me is the driveline hitting the bottom of the car which means it's under a huge amount of strain for it to move that far.
Seriously, nobody here is going to be able to tell you the noise was anything other than your tranny fighting back at you for launching the car.

You chose to do this on a almost brand new car why? Good luck when something happens and the dealership denies your warranty claim.

No you didn't and I didn't watch the video, sorry.
I'm guessing the other people you've seen do it are also 20ish years old and don't know what they're doing to their cars. No offense, you asked a question and you're getting honest answers. It's a very stupid thing to do unless you like replacing expensive driveline components.

...wow...actually it is kind of a "big deal". You know that loud ass pop that you decided to make this thread about? That's you doing it wrong.....You ever heard of how WRX's have "weak transmissions"? Yea, that's why.....
Either you A. don't do it anymore and avoid problems B. learn how to launch an AWD vehicle properly and only do it at the track because well, there isn't a need for it anywhere else C. keep thinking everyone on here is stupid and you know better and do it again and you'll eventually break some part of your drive train.
