    Timing belt +

New member, new owner. Bought an '06 wrx last week with 72,000 mi. and will likely be replacing the timing belt, water pump etc. My question is, would I benefit by having an upgraded belt? I've seen the likes of Greddy, Gates, HKS among others, but they're very expensive. They claim to make a more durable belt, but I have doubts it's any better than stock, and if there's no real gains, I may as well buy genuine ??

Why? The belt is not due until 105K. Is there something wrong with the car? Is the cooling system OK?

Of the brands you listed only Gates constructs and sells belts. The others only sell belts as far as I can work out; presumably, they buy them from Gates or Continental, and my guess would be Gates.

and if there's no real gains, I may as well buy genuine ??
It is unclear to me how genuine from Subaru and Gates differ.

Search "timing belt" and/or "Gates" and stuff like this comes up:

I suppose it's a bit soon . Just being cautious I guess. I read your post, and applaud you for getting it done yourself, not sure I could handle it, at least not without screaming m***er F**er every 5 minutes. So when the time comes, i'll spare myself the added expense of the higher priced belt. Thanks for the help.

To be completely safe and certain, since our models are different years, check the owner's manual. It will give you the interval. For my WRX it is 105K. Make sure it's the same for yours and if so, great.

Thanks, but don't get me wrong -- I'm sure I said things that'd make a Neapolitan sailor blush. There is a great how-to thread with pictures on this site, and in fact all the WRX sites of which I am aware have similar how-to threads. When the time comes, have a look and see if you're up for it.

Double check the service interval in the manual and go from there. Welcome to the site and congrats on the car.
