    Oil Loss

    New owner here...

    02 WRX wagon

    161k miles

    No mods

    Use 10w-30 oil

Car is leaking/burning more and more oil. It's now up to 1 quart every 750 miles or so...

Once in awhile I notice white smoke after idling in one spot for awhile, then accelerating.

I'm thinking the seals could be shot since it's a high mileage vehicle. Or maybe some of the oil lines to/from the turbo are leaking. But the burning leads me to think it's the seals.

Any ideas? Would the next step be to get a compression test? I'm sure it's going to be an expensive fix.....

    Thanks guys

Try a different oil. I like Shell Rotella T. I no longer have disappearing oil.

Thanks, I'll give that oil a shot. What stores carry it?

I'm thinking it has to be a bigger problem though, going through 5 quarts every 3k miles...maybe bad ring(s)?

With 161k miles you are probably right. It does not hurt to try a new oil though. I buy the Shell Rotella-T at my local car parts store. It says it is for diesels but don't worry about that there are plenty of people who use it in their WRX.

If you are still losing lots of oil then it is time for a compression check.
