MY CEL IS ON. Im no mechanic and leave this to my brother but he's out of town so I need some help I think the previous owner of my car had straight pips installed and removed the catalytic converter or something is it suppose to show the cel? the car still runs like its suppose to has all the oil changes and necessary oils.

If the cat has been removed and no CEL fix has been done or the CEL hsn't been disabled with a tuning device, then yes, you'll get a CEL. To be sure, you should go to your local autoparts place (Checker/O'Reillys, or Autozone, unless you're in CA), and they will pull the code for free for you.

Post up what the code is and we can help you from there, but with no code, we can't possibly know what the problem is. However, it likely is the code for the cat effeciency (P0420).

ya the code is P0420 from the autozone receipt I got back. Is it something that will kill my car or something I need to worry about. and is it the catalytic converter removal thing?

Won't kill your car, no, it's just saying that the cat isn't doing it's job. It's not easy for the cat to do it's job if it's not there is it?

Anyways, you can purchase mechanical fixes for this, it's basically a little spacer that goes between the bung on the downpipe and the sensor itself. Pulls the sensor out of the exhaust flow just enough to make the ECU think there's a cat there. I'd suggest purchasing that, installing, resetting your ECU by pulling the negative cable off the battery for a bit, and then trying again. Should be fixed.

Aside from being annoying as all hell while driving? No, no issues, though I'd do the mechanical fix as soon as possible just to get rid of it.

Pretty cheap and easy as long as you have a 1/2" drill bit.

If you leave the CEL on, you won't know if something else is wrong though! So fix it fast!

sorry to bring up an old thread but thought its better than starting a new one. I am getting a CEL with a cat code. My question is how do I know if its the cat in the downpipe or the pre-cat in the uppipe?
