If the cat has been removed and no CEL fix has been done or the CEL hsn't been disabled with a tuning device, then yes, you'll get a CEL. To be sure, you should go to your local autoparts place (Checker/O'Reillys, or Autozone, unless you're in CA), and they will pull the code for free for you.
Post up what the code is and we can help you from there, but with no code, we can't possibly know what the problem is. However, it likely is the code for the cat effeciency (P0420).
