    Spun rod bearing???

i was told (by a mech, that owns his own shop) that i have a spun rod bearing. he showed me my dipstick, and it had copper flakes in it. could it be somthing else?? if it is a spun rod bearing, would it be cheaper to buy a new/used engine (like the mech suggested) or would it be cheaper to replace the bearing myself?

It is usually cheaper to replace with a known good used motor. Exceptions are when doing your own work, devaluing your own time (making the rationale a bit irrational in the process), and leaving the motor in place - this is probably not that kind of job.

Why did the bearing fail though? Fix the cause first.

not exactly sure wat the prob is.
i was driving at 70mph, on cruise control. heard a slight tick, so i turned off my radio. after 2-3 minutes, my car cut off. so i turned it back on, and cla-dunk cla-dunk. extreme loss of power, no acceleration what-so-ever. and the BIGGEST downfall of this whole sittuation, is the fact that i bought this used car w/o a warranty (due 2 my wife complaining about the price) and 2 days, and 120 miles later the above stated happend. so i am stuck with 260$ amonth payments on a car that dosnt run, and i have 2 fork out like 4-5k for repairs

That's terrible, very sorry to hear that! It is likely that the car was poorly maintained and/or modified by the previous owner I'd imagine.

It's usually cheaper to replace the engine with a known good used one if such a replacement is available.

What model/year do you drive? I seem to remember spun bearings being the main symptom of the failures in the early 2009 WRX.

May not have anything to do with it but if you drive a 2009 rex with a build date of 07/08 - 09/08 it might be a factory defect.
