I find that in 2nd gear when almost stopped but not wanting to shift to first...
from 1000rpm it is just absolutely gutless in 2nd gear!! until 3000rpm...
is this normal?
seems dangerous when merging with busy traffic etc. with zero acceleration
Yes it is normal. Shift into first if you are worried about merging into traffic.
You still running the OEM uppipe? If so, take care of that ticking timebomb; it will also net you some power and spool.

Simple, downshift to first. If you're at 1000 rpm in 2nd then you're in the wrong gear.

yea that is why you have 1st gear. However it does kinda suck when you get stuck in that spot when you are too slow for 2nd but too fast to get into 1st easily.

I don't see why you should be having any problems. Sometimes I think the most fun I have in my car is while in first and second gear.
You can't downshift into first with my 2002 last time I checked. It sucks a LOT

Question about downshifting into first
apparently double clutching helps. I'll have to try it. Because I hate bogging in second
I have problems shifting into 1st as well, even at low RPMs. I've learned to plan for it and never let my RPMs sink below 2k in second. Otherwise, I have to basically stop, put it into 1st, and then go. It really sucks when you pull up to a red light and it turns green right before you stop! You hit the gas and go nowhere until about 2500.
Granted, I'm running stock right now, and as stated, some simple mods might alleviate the problem.

rev matching all but fixes the issue
I usually rev match when I've put the shifter into the lower gear, then release clutch. You're suggesting I rev match then move it into first?
hopefully this isn't bad for the car. I've only been driving it for a month
Well I just read and apparently I learned wrong. People rev match before putting it into the lower gear. It seems to me that's the same exact thing though. As long as the clutch is disengaged
