    09 WRX Crazy oil consumption!!!!???

So decided at random to check the cars oil today. After a few attempts I could get no reading on the dipstick! I had to add over 2 litres of oil to the engine and its now up to level again but I had it done probably around 3500 kms ago so its should not have used that much!!

I also noticed the oil was very very black. It had obviously gotten very hot and broken down so it will be getting a flush and full change tommorrow.

Im just wondering... any reason why my car would use that much oil??? I mean i do drive the car a bit intensly sometimes but im not exactly off the limiter every change either.

Also the girlfriend was driving behind me today and she said my car smelt funny, maybe like burning gas.

    So strange????!!!

Ever notice any smoke from the exhaust on a cold start-up?

You may have fallen victim to engine failure. Get a compression and leak down test done.

The car runs just fine though, no problems at all except the low oil. Would I not see any other symptoms?

Also my brother mentioned he may have seen some black smoke from my car but not much.

put some cardboard down and park over it- see if you have any telltale leaks

I had a head gasket go on my 09 (at the same time a engine mount went- coincidence??????), they replaced my engine mount that was broken, but said they couldn't find any oil leak (I was about 2 quarts down as well)- I started to drive it home (150 miles) and stopped at a rest area half way- had a hunch and checked the oil- sure enough it was off the dipstick- called the Subaru Road Assistance (they towed my vehicle there originally as well)- low and behold this time they discovered the head gasket

regardless- if it continues to eat oil, bring it in

I would say take it in now. If the oil is black and they see it, then they will actually look for the problems. But if you change the oil, then they might not believe you.

+1, maybe, if it drops down again, leave it like that and take it in as more possible evidence

I would do Exactly this, you still have Warranty and Road side Assistance, might as well use it right?

Another idea might be to check your intercooler for blowby. If there is a lot of oil in it, you might have broken ringlands, which seems to be somewhat common in '09s.

And second if you drive your car "hard" as is constantly shifting at high RPMs then you will lose oil. Trust me I did an oil change at 37k miles and ive been known to drive my car a bit hard and about 1k miles after the oil change I checked and what do you know 2 quarts short. These turbos when spooling a lot will burn up oil quickly.
