Just run some fuel injector cleaner through, and see if that does anything. Replacing the fuel filter wouldn't be a bad idea either. You don't want to have to replace the injectors... that's a costly repair.

8 PSI is very near baseline boost. This implies the wastegate may be the issue. Intermittent problems also fit, if the flap is getting stuck once in a while. Double check the wastegate. Check both the actuator and the connections.

    Spiros,

When you're near mechanical boost, that usually implies that it's NOT an issue with the wastegate. In general if your maximum boost is at approximately spring pressure it means that your BCS is stuck bleeding, there is a leak in the "boost lines" (vacuum hoses for the boost system), the restrictor pill is absent, the ECU is in limp mode and pulling boost due to severe detonation, or the ECU's tuned to use a MBC.

This is what I'm voting for...I'd venture to say it's an issue with the vacuum lines if anything.

Could be an intermittent leak...maybe one of the vacuum lines has a tear, and it opens up when it gets hot/warm or there's a bunch of boost, then closes back up a bit as it cools down.

ah ok good observation. yeah, that's a good diagnosis, the best so far.

Eh, it comes with being around these cars so much It also very well could be a missing restrictor pill, the ECU going into limp mode, or it could even be a fueling issue as well. It's hard to say without actually seeing/driving the car in person.

I was thinking that the fuel system could be affecting it because he mentions it's fine when it's filled.

if he has water in the tank, sediment, etc... when the car is filled, the fuelpump would be getting clean fuel, but as it mixes up with whatever is in the tank, then he could be getting detonation and the ECU would retard. If the refilling the tank has absolutely no correlation with it (which now the OP doesn't seem confident that it does...) then I'd lean towards a cracked hose, etc

In the US we call the different versions, "versions". In Europe they call them "evolutions".

So an Evo 5 WRX would be a v.5 WRX.

Now what puzzles me is he wrote 2002 v.5 WRX. Version 5's were in 98/99.

No. The Evo 5 WRX is a new age bugeye Impreza with works sunroof available in I think roughly 200 copies in AU.

EDIT: That'd make it a Club Spec V7 with Evo 5 package I suppose. OP, what colour is your car?

    Hi guys,

Sorry it took me a while to reply...
I own a 2002 WRX club spec 5 (i think they were called evo 5 as well.. the bug eye shape)

I havent had a chance to take it to MRT as yet...
Some interesting theories as to what might be the problem....
hoping to take it to mrt and they are able to diagnose it for me..
Wondering if it will cost much to diagnose? any ideas?
I had a look at the vacuum lines and cant see any visable split, however when my mate owned it, he got the one of the vacuum hoses replaced as it did actually split... he only knew it split cause the engine light came on... if thats the case again with me... shouldnt the engine light come on as well theoritically?
