02 WRX Strange Taillight Problems

My WRX is stock. I have had it for 4 years and only had minor problems. The other day someone told me that I had left my lights on. This is imposible because my keys were in my hand. I went out and sure enough, my tailights and parking lights were on even with the car off and the lights turned to off. I pulled the #5 fuse which only goes to those. I have had to put it back in to drive home from work the last couple of nights but everything else seems to be fine. Any ideas?

This is covered in the owner's manual and is also answered in several threads.

You have pressed a switch on the top of the steering column. Press it back and have a look at the manual because it's actually a useful feature.

You are now officially a Subaru family member. Happens to everyone, don't sweat it. You'll get **** for it, but I'm pretty sure Subaru put that damn thing there just to make this kind of thing happen.

funny story :

my fiance and i were going to the movies one day & he was driving the subie.

everytime my steering column shakes i tell him to hit it so it stops. [i think you guys might see where this is going]

so yeah.. the movie lets out 3 hours later... we go back to my car & it doesnt start [dead battery].

smarty pants hit the parking light switch while he was hitting my steering column and neither of us noticed because it was light outside. :sigh:

Of all the times customers have come in complaining of a problem like this, I have prob. spent hours of my time simply just walking out and turning that switch off...
