    Center diff?

Hey guys, I have a 93 Impreza, EJ18 with an auto trans. Drivin one day when I noticed there was a whining sound when I take my foot off the gas, drove it about 20 miles, sound started out faint, then by mile 15 was pretty loud, very chewbaka sounding. I'm thinking its my center diff and I don't have the cash to fix it so I'm just wonderin, if anyone could tell me what would happen if I keep driving it like this, when will it happen, and how bad will it be? Thanks.

I'd be proactive. If you don't have the cash to fix it now, I imagine that driving your car in this state won't remedy the issue, but likely make it worse. Go get it checked out by a certified mechanic. Then you'll know the issue and paying $70 up front beats the hell out of paying $4000 for a new tranny when you trash the center diff and destroy your driveline. Just my opinion, you need not action if you do not wish.

I'd find a nice local mechanic who you can get to know some what personally. Befriended mechanics are to be trusted less than your worst enemies (Machiavelli missed that logic flaw), but are better than any random mechanic looking to snake you out of that extra buck (or $4000).

That being said, I'd suggest finding one. Take your car there and a lot of times he can look over it quickly and give you a good idea. Ours doesn't charge for "initial" appointments any longer.

I would be careful not to mention that you are debating fixing it or not... The mechanic will almost positively say it needs done now regardless.

Can't answer your problem more specifically, just a couple suggestions from a post-caddy owner, and current 98 astro van owner. Swear I have paid half that mechanics salary =P

Do not drive at all like this. I can't believe someone would hear a god awful noise coming from their trans and ask if they can drive with it doing that. Sounds like your center diff binding. I'd be sure to check what's up with your tires and how much of a difference your wear is.
