Actually, in some cases you are to raise the engine.

Any "friend" who wants to charge you $300 for an uppipe install isn't really a friend at all

I charge people beer to help them install something, and we split whatever they brought.

If you feel mechanically confident to DIY, then you have to have enough competence that that person would merely be helping you do the install...

agreed. it sounds like he sees it as work.. dont get me wrong its definatly going to take several hours, but it should be fun. both of you get together and tackle it together, and beer sounds like the appropriate payment

This also depends on how many miles are on the vehicle and what kind of rust were talking about haha...Those bolts/studs can snap pretty easy when they have been weathered for years/ thousands of miles....

i did mine myself with only about 19,000 miles on my car and when i wasn't nearly as tech savvy as i am now.

basically take it one step at a time, spray plenty on rust penetrent on all the uppipe, downpipe and header bolts the day before and rive your car so they heat up and soak in the spray. you will need to just un-do to motor mount bolts on the passenger side mount and use a floor jack to jack up the motor a few inches to worm the uppipe in and out and if you take off the front right wheel and inner fender splash guard you will free up a lot of room to work with.

Obviously this will vary from place to place, but a rough guesstimate of how much I'd have to pay a shop to a do it???

This is usually how up-pipe installs go:

Step 1: Stab yourself in the face
    Step 2: Kick your car
Step 3: Yell incomplete obscenities at your car
    Step 4: Shoot your neighbor
    Step 5: Install complete
